Broken Torsion Springs

Broken garage door springs are a common problem. The most common symptom of a broken spring is when you activate your garage door opener, the door moves up a few inches and then stops. Some garage door openers will still lift the door open with a broken spring,  however, the door may struggle while doing so.

Torsion springs are normally located on a torsion bar that is connected to the wall right above the garage door. The springs can be seen when the door is fully closed. Without these springs, you wouldn't be able to lift the door as they act as a counterbalance.

If your garage door has more than 1 spring it is our policy to replace both at the same time. The springs break from wear and it will save you time and money to have them replaced at the same time.Garage door springs are rated on life cycles and most doors are installed with 10,000 cycle life springs. If you open your door 5 times per day x 365 days per year = 1825 cycles. Divide 10,000 cycles by 1825 = 5.48 years of cycle life.

If you experience broken springs every couple years, we can install springs with a higher cycle life.
Broken Extension Springs

Unfortunately garage door springs are the most dangerous part of your garage door, however they are the most important part. Springs wear out over time and when they break they can be dangerous.

An extension spring system consists of a pair of stretched springs running parallel with the horizontal tracks. The springs lift the door through a system of pulleys and counterbalance cables that run from the bottom corner brackets through the pulleys. When the door goes up, the springs contract and lift the door as the tension is released.

Safety cables are essential on every extension spring system. These cables run through the spring and are attached to the wall or ceiling. Extension springs are under a great deal of tension and if one were to break, it could cause severe injury or death. Safety cables prevent the spring from flying freely. Protect yourself and your vehicle with safety cables.

If you have extension springs and you don't see the safety cables, call us to have them installed!
